MRSA In Our Schools Resources
The Atlantic County Division of Public Health, along with the help from school officials and parents, would
like to continue the commitment to protect students from MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
skin infections. To assist in this effort, we are reissuing the state’s MRSA guidance document with additional
links to educational materials that will help school officials, parents and other special groups prevent the spread
of MRSA in schools. Information and advice about MRSA for special groups are available on the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) web page at http://www.cdc.gov/mrsa/groups/index.html.

Attention
Atlantic County Providing Free Student Vaccinations
The Atlantic County Division of Public Health continues to provide free Menactra vaccinations to provide protection against meningitis. The state requires students entering sixth grade and students who live in New Jersey college dormitories or student housing to receive this immunization.

Meningitis is caused by meningococcal bacteria and may result in permanent disabilities and even death. Youth ages 16 through 21 years have the highest rates of meningococcal disease, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.
In addition to this important immunization, the Atlantic County Division of Public Health provides the Gardasil vaccine, at no cost, regardless of income or insurance status. Guardisil provides protection against most strains of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Both vaccines were provided to the Division of Public Health through the state’s Vaccine Preventable Disease Program funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
These vaccinations have proven to be effective in preventing and controlling the spread of disease by inducing immunity, according to county Public Health Officer Patricia Diamond. But they can be expensive, ranging in price from $150 for a Menactra injection to as much as $170 per shot for the three-dose Gardasil series, excluding the additional office visit fees and co-pays.

Residents can call (609) 645-5933 to schedule an appointment to receive these free vaccinations. For more information, please contact Patricia Diamond, Atlantic County Health Officer, at (609) 645-5935.
Support for Families from the New Jersey Department of Education
In an effort to further foster family participation towards achieving educational excellence for every child, the NJ Department of Education has recently created a family “help desk” to help families better understand their educational rights and responsibilities, as well as student options and opportunities.
